ADHD Inclusion in The Workplace

Neurodivergence, as a concept, simply means that brain differences between individuals are entirely natural variations - and, of course, everybody’s brain works in a different way.

For 20 per cent of the UK adult population, this can mean a neurological diagnosis of differences such as ADHD, autism or dyslexia.

For employers, hiring a neurodivergent workforce is absolutely essential for progress and growth, bringing with it a wide range of benefits - including greater access to a deeper talent pool than ever.

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a form of neurodivergence characterised by:

  • Inattention, including difficulty staying focused, forgetfulness, being easily distracted and issues with task organisation

  • Hyperactivity, including an inability to sit still/an overwhelming urge to move

  • Impulsivity, including difficulty waiting in turn, interrupting and acting without thinking

How to create an ADHD-friendly workplace in the UK

Under the Equality Act, employers are legally required to ensure that reasonable adjustments are made for people with ADHD, supporting equal opportunities for recruitment and improving staff retention.

Employers are urged to encourage confidential (optional) disclosure of neurodivergence early on in the recruitment process so that reasonable adjustments can be put in place before start dates.

What are reasonable adjustments for ADHD employment?

  • Accessible and structured onboarding, including visual aids, clear written instructions, predictable yet flexible timetables, sensory-friendly induction spaces and support mentor provision

  • Workplace needs assessments to consider poor task structure, distracting noise or lighting and ineffective communication styles

  • Flexible start and finish times

  • Break reminders and structured breaks

  • Visual task boards

  • Digital planners

  • Quiet zones

  • Noise-cancelling headphones

  • Regular brief check-ins over lengthy meetings

  • Assistive technology

Key employment rate statistics for people with ADHD

A review from the Attention Deficit Disorder Association indicates that:

  • Staff members with ADHD are 30 per cent more likely to have chronic issues with employment

  • 60 per cent of employees are more likely to be fired from a job

  • Employees are three times more likely to quit jobs impulsively

  • At least 24 per cent of staff members are on long-term sick leave due to stress-related illnesses

  • Concerns persist over social rejection and workplace bullying, as well as missed promotions and job termination

What are the benefits of building a neurodivergent workforce?

  • Increased productivity

  • Faster problem solving

  • Improved pattern recognition

  • Innovative thinking

  • Higher conversion rates

  • Improved leadership

  • Increased psychological safety

  • Improved staff retention
